With Richard Palmer-James’ lyrics hovering somewhere between In The Ghetto and West Side Story, the roiling guitar arpeggios originally appeared in 1972 but were not pressed into a song until the making of the Red album where they were met in the middle by the Wetton-composed bridge.

It was during soundchecks on the 2014 tour that this motif was initially tried and tested to see if it had legs. Thankfully it did and was featured in concert in its final form the following year, eventually making its recorded debut on Live In Toronto in 2016

It’s probably wrong to single out one instrument in an ensemble but it’s hard to imagine this song without those intensely evocative Mellotron strings. It’s been said many times before but Peter Sinfield’s 1969 lyric remains ominously relevant to the world in which we live today. Uncertain Times indeed.

King Crimson is recast as a mutant-jazz outfit with Mel’s surging baritone sax weaving its way through the Fripp-composed slashing chords that date back to the exploratory sessions prior to the recording of Exposure. Extra depth and texture comes via piano on this compelling remake of an old classic.

Composed by Fripp with some fine-tuning and assistance by Ian McDonald, the Crimson ballad has always been part of the band’s DNA so it’s especially welcome to see the very first one KC ever recorded making an other-worldly entrance to the set.

What could be more appropriate when performing at Stockholm’s Cirkus than to play Cirkus? After an especially bulldozing version, containing some rather fine guitar runs from Jakko and some spine-tingling Mellotron, it’s a wonder the venerable building was left standing.

Originally written in 1969 and remodeled the following year for In The Wake Of Poseidon this song whose lyrics refer to a pair of groupies was last performed by Mel and Robert in April 1972. Though commemorating time long past this welcome return to the KC setlist finds these gentlemen of maturing years more than capable of providing a rendition...

Containing an especially turbulent middle section this is a terrific reading of the piece. It’s all the more astonishing when you consider that thanks to a dodgy devil bug, Jakko spent most of the show and this track, in particular, feeling nauseous and fighting back a very real need to produce a technicolor yawn right there on stage.

Some things just get better with age and with each tour, the title track from KC’s 1969 debut subtly improves and gains a greater depth. The keyboard voicings and Mel Collins’ flute work is beautiful. However, the addition The Dance Of The Puppets truly completes the piece in stunning fashion. Aside from the original and definitive,...

Restored to the setlist in 2014 after an absence of 42 years Pictures Of City has grown to be one of the grand achievements of the reformed King Crimson. There’s an abundance of riches to get excited about here; Mel’s scorching sax solo, thunderous drumming, clamouring guitars, stunning vocal, supple bass, cinematic keyboards - this one has...
