Bredonborough.
Organising the roll-top desk yesterday, various treasures & personal objects surfaced from below the pile of other various treasures & personal objects. Photos of a series of young Nunez beasts at different ages, Schwutke beasts at different ages, and a hand-painted card from John Miler…
… asking for our new address (in 1999 we had just moved to Deepest Dorset).
09.27 At 09.16 it became clear: write notes for the upcoming re-releases of the KC catalogue.
Oh dear. Revisiting the history is hard, harder now than ever. Were this to be all that my life holds, to be constantly personally & professionally dealing with necessities of the catalogue – life might be fair but it would also be cruel.
And yet, when a gentle prompting stirs us, it is followed by recognition, then acknowledgement, then a response. This is necessary. And if it’s necessary, we get on with it.
Why necessary? An answer may appear in the fullness of time, when the work has been discharged. Long experience of following gentle promptings, of sensing necessity, suggests it is better to trust to what we feel as a right course of action than spend time attempting to rationalise. Rationalisation is likely, however, if we are doing interviews, or presenting an argument to management, record company & agency as to why it’s going to go a different way. Fortunately, interviews are no longer part of my job description; and I no longer answer to Agents of Industry: I answer to the Agent of Necessity.
Then it followed shortly afterwards: I saw how to write the book/s.

Scepticism is a virtue, but risks becoming cynicism.
Cynicism is a vice.
Faith is a virtue, but risks becoming belief.
This is a weakness.
May we hold scepticism close;
may Faith hold us closer.
But let us not belittle the beliefs of others,
for although beliefs are legion they may lead to faith.
And Faith is one.

The creative process is utterly mysterious.
It is magical, unknowable, indefinable.
The creative process is concrete.
It is know-able, do-able, feel-able, available.
Both these statements are true.
Both these statements are contradictory.
Unless we embrace and hold these two equal truths,
we are not part of a creative process.
That is, we are not part of the creative process.
That is, we are not part of the process of Creating.

Q. Where does music come from?
A. Where was the world before it was made? Find that place and you will find Music.
10.36 A visit from Janet Interior Designer & Mr. Carpet Person to measure up the attic for sisal flooring.
10.59 An e-letter has come in from a Crafty, reporting on their work with an aim. From the reply…
if we have an aim, we DO NOT forget it for days. if this is so, we do not have an aim, only imagination.
and what is “being in service to other people”? this is too broad, impractical & non-specific to be of any use at all.
so, your increasing specificity is good: your Sister. so, what are you going to do to be of service to her? specifically, what are you going to do, when, how, and for how long a period?
this must be precise so that the three phases are clear: injunction, application, verification.
and it's not much use doing your best. this is another woolly notion, and is assumed in any case: if we're not going to do our best, let's not bother & have an easier life!
so, you will, or you will not. and if you will, specifically: what, when & how?

17.59 Stuff. Everyday, do something that redeems the past, addresses what is necessary for today, and prepares for tomorrow.
And writing KC sleeve-notes.
18.37 An outbreak of e-flurrying now settled. A call made to a member of the Guitar Craft family who has major surgery later this week.
To practise.
