Le Trompe l'Oiel Paris France

The second date at Le Trompe L’oiel in Paris is represented by this continuous hour-long recording. With drifting sonorous notes wreathed in an analogue sizzle, the first thirty minutes are concerned with creating a slow-but-steady space. Only then does the guitarist begin to introduce a sequence of bass-end notes, which if not exactly darker in tone, are certainly more ominous in character. The change in key at around the 39 minute mark sees Fripp shifting into the end game. Although tiny jagged barbs appear and briefly multiply, this hint at a choppier direction is quickly abandoned in favour of calmer seas. A serene and hauntingly beautiful concert. Highly recommended.

Simply beautiful
In general, I prefer Frippertronics with the solos added back in, but these Restaurant shows are a major exception. Given the extreme length of the pieces one assumes that the performer never intended to go back and solo over the top of these - perhaps that altered his approach sightly? In any case, there are beautiful and engaging ambient pieces, some of the best of the Frippertronics downloads.

"Meaning is like going up to someone I would be with, though often the distance doesn’t seem to lessen no matter how straight my course. Busy moving ahead, I can’t also observe myself moving, let alone assess the speed of full steam minus fiction and sidetracked in metric crevices. It’s hard to identify with the image of an arrow even if itpoints only to the application we make of it. But then, meandering does not guarantee thought either though it simulates its course toward wider angles,...
