Throughout the performances at Washington Square Church the soundscapes had been interspersed with contributions from the California Guitar and Los Gauchos Allemanes. Although these numbers are not available in this presentation, the contrast between these two vastly different is easily imagined and perhaps puts into context the orchestral counterpoint the soundscapes offered to the New Standard Tuning pointillistic tunes. The CGT were told, Fripp recalled, to blow him off the stage. “This they did regularly,” he adds. For some 20- 30 minutes Fripp offer what he describes as whirring, bleeping, and droning. "Then the (generally polite and patient) audience would gratefully embrace something more recognisably musical.”
Selections from these four performances were edited and incorporated into That Which Passes, released in 1996. This is the first time that the complete performances have been made available.
