This concert was originally issued as KCCC 30 in 2004. Writing the liner notes, Ian Wallace, responding to some of the criticism’s made about Boz’s contributions at the time, had this observation to make. “This is obviously a band at its peak, enjoying one another’s playing and it shows. Mel, Robert, Ian are stretching out whilst Boz is anchoring the whole thing, steady and ultimately reliable, enabling the others to take it out as far as Pluto and back without ever getting lost. A musical lighthouse if you will saving the others from an impending train wreck...That was the thing about Boz that so many people didn’t get. Apart from being lyrical, his playing was solid and reliable. Something that is so necessary in playing this kind of music where anything can happen at any given time. I guess many of the listeners didn’t get that. But the players sure did.” You can hear Boz stretching out quite a bit himself during the improv section of The Letters, as well as a rare Mellotronic interjection from Fripp in the climatic moments of the track. Also of note is the live version of Islands. The sound quality of this bootleg is notably better than the boot from the previous evening which means we get a clearer ear-view of Fripp’s picking and embellishments on the track. Despite the lo-fi provenance this is a thing of joy.

Almost all of "Islands"
This show is as close as one can get to a full live set of the album "Islands" by the band that recorded it. Only "Prelude-Song of the Gulls" is missing (because that would be quite impossible to play without a chamber ensemble). But, the 15+ minute drum solo in Groon is a suitable substitute, especially when Sinfield kicks in the VCS-3. Once you get past the boom-y recording and hear the music behind the murk, this concert is a must have. Even if you have the "Sailors' Tales" box set, you ne...

Islands. Live. Need I say more?
Perhaps I do. This is a listenable audience recording, but the sound is not what you'd call good. The performance is solid, but not particularly inspired (although Boz is on very fine form both on bass and vocals in "Groon"). However, this is the only listenable live recording of "Islands" and it's a shame this arrangement did not survive to be better recorded. The guitar lines and mellotron build-up at the end are quite wonderful. Recommended download? I guess that depends on how much of a comp...

Best of the October 71 Tour Downloads
I would score this set Setlist 5, Performance 4, Sound 3. The SQ here is certainly not great, but after playing through the tough Bournemouth Winter Gardens and Preston Public Hall recordings this is a veritable 'island' of audio quality. I really enjoy the performances on the October '71 shows that we have available but the recordings are all deep down the cassette bootleg rabbit hole. Of the lot the Brighton Dome show has the most replay value in my world. No shock that this is the one that...

Setlist 5, Performance 4, Sound 2. Another of my recent additions after 2/3 years and because of KC coming to Montreal next week :). I got to have a live version of Islands and I am a bit disappointed in the sound quality ofg this show in general. The notes say its OK, but from my 10ish downloads this is the most disappointing one to mt ears. It is worth it for Islands and also a great performance of Letters but be aware of the sound quality.
