The December edition of Uncut has Noddy Holder reminiscing about his time on tour with Crimson. Forever associated with the yule-time spirit thanks to their classic hit Merry Christmas Everybody, the gravel-voiced lead singer of 70s glam-rockers, Slade, is doing the rounds promoting a ‘best of’ dvd and cd package.
Whilst
the cultural significance of Noddy may be lost on readers from the USA
and elsewhere, here In the UK, Noddy is as much a part of Christmas as
plastic mistletoe, a screening of The Great Escape on tele and the
returned purchases queue at Marks & Spencers.
Speaking of how difficult a live crowd can be, Noddy observes in an interview with Uncut:
“We’d played on mixed bills in the States with bands like The Strawbs and King Crimson, so we had no problem pulling stuff out of the bag. We’d learnt every trick in the book. And those American audiences were all stoned out of their heads and shouting ‘boogie boogie!’, so Crimson didn’t go down too well, I can tell you. One time they were playing 21st Century Schizoid Man – and when I see Robert [Fripp} I still remind him of this – and Robert’s playing away and then he gets up off his stool and walks up to the microphone and goes, ‘We have absolutely no intention of boogieing!’’ “
I’m grateful to The Enigmatic Simon for spotting this one and sending it to me. Consequently receives the DGM Live Golden Anorak Award. Wear it with pride Simon!
