SOUNDSCAPE SUNDAY: KENEALLY
Posted by Sid Smith on Feb 15, 2015

Regarded by Fripp as something of a development in his ongoing work with soundscapes, the concert captures the Fripp at his most emotional and yearning. Lasting over one and a half hours, the slow-burning concert presents a series of musical peaks that are often profoundly moving.

This week’s Soundscape Sunday feature has not one but two guitarists - Robert Fripp and Mike Keneally at work.

This excerpt is taken from Robert’s solo spot on the G4 tour with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Kenny Wayne Shepherd. During the tour Fripp was occasionally joined by members of the touring band who were invited to take a solo with the soundscapes.

Here, Mike Keneally provides some yearning notes in a tone that invokes something of Fripp’s past work while managing to bring his own assertive musicality to the fore. Writing at the time, Fripp observed “Mike Keneally was able to solo over [Soundscapes] in a way I have never been able to achieve for myself. He gave me answers to questions I had felt for myself, but never had the courage or capacity to find an answer".
