Stoked. That’s the word that usefully summarises how the band sounds at the start of this show in Detroit’s State Theatre. “Thank you very much. Good evening. Prepare yourself for Difficult Listening Hour,” says Belew to the punters after a couple of numbers and that might also be another phrase which describes a King Crimson concert.

It’s all very subjective of course, but there’s a touch more energy in the show tonight than the previous night. Such things are probably impossible to quantify and as Robert so often says what we perceive is our own perception (very rough paraphrase alert).

Nevertheless, the spring and snap in the step from Gunn’s roving lines and Mastelotto’s on-point percussive bring a surge of excitement to every track. And if Fripp’s solo in the middle of Facts Of Life doesn’t quicken your pulse then it’s possible that you may well have inadvertently shuffled off this mortal coil.
