Hearing three drummers opening a King Crimson set was definitely something of a novelty in 1996. Is it possible that the memory of seeing Pat Mastelotto, Bill Bruford, and Adrian Belew performing the percussive intricacies of Conundrum out at the front of the stage gave Robert Fripp an idea when it came to putting a new lineup together in 2013?

The previous day the band had played Asbury Park, a name steeped in KC history, and now as he greets the crowd at the outdoor venue, Belew says “It’s great to be back. Feels like it’s only been ten years or so.”

There’s a fair amount of energy present at this show, which given the long road they’ve been on, is really rather remarkable. Vrooom Vrooom tears off with such a velocity after the languor of One Time, it’s like being pressed back into the seat of the car. Afterward, an elated Belew asks “Are we having fun yet?” The answer is an unequivocal yes. After this show, the band moved on toward Philadelphia which would prove to be their final gig as a touring entity.
