Zoom Club Frankfurt Germany

The debut show for Mel, Boz, RF and Ian and what a fantastic atmosphere this soundboard recording has! The band are incredibly animated, clearly delighted to be away from their basement rehearsal room [endtease]and obviously enjoying the liberation of being onstage. The shouts of encouragement and approval being exchanged – often in mid-song – give this recording an astonishing intimacy. Highlights include Fripp’s razor-sharp lines in the chorus section of Cirkus. There's an enchanting version of Lady of The Dancing Water with winsome backing vocals from Ian, trimmed with some rich baritone sax. And listen out for the running lines and slashing chords from LTIA pt1 as they make their debut during a radically different and experimental Sailor’s Tale.

Great premiere show by argubaly, KC's greatest line-up!
I'm a complete sucker for this line-up. I bought the sailor's tales box set right away when I could and fell completely in love with it when I finished it. This is the first of many shows that the Boz-led KC group had played, when they had formed up and started. This show is a blast from start-to-finish! Groundbreaking sailor's tale with amazing solos from bobby during schizoid! Only low point is the devil's triangle which doesn't live up as much to the album version.

Resistance Is Useless
While it seems like opinions are split over the sound of the VCS-3, I enjoy it very much. At times I could swear the drum solo sounds like an invasion of gen 1 Cybermen from Mondas. If your only exposure to this version of Crimson is "Earthbound," give this show a listen. It is a much better representation of this amazing collection of musicians.

Another jewel!
Setlist 5, performance 5, sound 4. Another new addition to my collection after 2/3 years. And just like my Chesterfield pleasant surprise, this show is solid, the sound is very good and the performance for a new line-up is pretty much amazing. Cirkus is awesome (probably my favorite version), my only live rendition of get thy bearings of this line-up is probably my favorite also being so jazzy and for a rare time lady of the dancing water live is very clear, jazzy and nice.

Essential
Absolute essential download! These early warm-up shows at the Zoom Club show how much potential this line-up actually had, especially with Mel Collins and Ian Wallace. Unfortunately they didn’t had somebody like Jamie Muir who’d taken them on a plane and jump out of the cockpit in mid-flight, so when the "real" tour got on its feet, somehow the real potential never evolved. But at the Frankfurt shows you can hear more Crim in this band, as fan-written history would attribute to this line-up ...
