Westfalen Park Dortmund Germany

After a decent run-through the first five numbers of the set, somehow they shift gears, with Vrooom Vrooom sounding particularly lethal, sweeping everything in its path aside. The delicate bells ushering in B’Boom give the punters time to catch their breath, but thereafter, Crimson really up the excitement. Thrak’s improv is like something out of demented horror movie with shock-and-awe percussives leaping out at the listener, creeping bass and pensive, sweeping strings. Even the appearance of a straight forward back beat does little to dispel the ominous air. Fripp and Gunn’s briefly intertwining duet is astonishingly powerful.

After all that drama, Schizoid Man takes things to the next level. The soundboard mix takes us up close to Levin’s bass work but the whole thing is dominated by a louder than usual Fripp solo, which, in the parlance of the time, shreds. Just these five tracks on their own provide a truly magnificent 25 minutes.

KC fan GW, who’d already caught the band in Cologne, observed that at this open-air gig “Vrooom, Vrooom Vrooom and Red shredded the leaves of the trees” but perhaps more amazingly,”Even my wife liked it.”
