The first number of a set-list is incredibly important. Much like the opening credits of a movie or top class TV show, it establishes the prevailing themes and moods that will be covered without giving away any spoilers. Inductive Resonance tells us that this is band who like a jaunty but regular beat, that things are direct and to the point, and the quirkiness evident in the first few bars indicate that this is no ordinary dance band.
After three upbeat numbers the first of two slabs of Thrang Thrang Gozinbulx drops onto the audience without any warning. Sounding like the Peter Gunn Theme on mogadon, a tirade of slashing chords dice and splice the air before leaving space for the guitar to unleash a truculent, bruising psychodrama of a solo. For many bands such an aleatoric outpouring might be the highlight of the evening, but for an average LOG gig, this is just one of many moments where jaws hit the floor.
There’s a tantalising albeit woefully brief bit of Frippertronics werning away beneath the applause prior to the encore version of Dislocated and a cut-off on the tape during the cheering suggests Robert’s stage announcements have been lost to posterity.
