There are some nights when the band are really in the zone and this is one of them. After the bulldozer opening of In The Frying Pan, the way is cleared for TCOL to magically hang and hover inches above the ground, such is the lightness of touch in this outing. Trey Gunn’s work on the track is outstanding, leading the way in the instrumental sections and then ducking out of view and digging deep in the verses. Gunn changes pace when they head into the first improv of the evening, delivering some white hot shards across Mastelotto’s stately groove and Fripp’s stalking bass FX. It’s easy to overlook songs that have been in the set list for a while but Dinosaur is in fine monstrous form tonight, with a marvelously off-the-wall solo from the Dorset branch of the band. The second improv is based around Seizure and may well be a contender for the best of the tour. Fripp uses a slightly different pedal setting and really takes off, his running lines skipping over the undulating grooves. The handover to Belew pushes the drama to another level. This is an incredibly powerful improv as befits a truly powerful gig.
