If you’re a fan of the Canterbury Sound then you’re going to be interested in our great DGM giveaway this week. Thanks to those nice people at Moonjune Records DGMLive visitors have a chance to score themselves a wonderful album.  Dedicated To You…But You Weren’t Listening: The music of Soft Machine by the Delta Saxophone Quartet was released last year to great acclaim. This classically trained quartet has established a reputation for adapting and arranging a wide variety of music for the saxophone.

The Guardian said of this album “it is refreshing to hear such an intelligent reinvention. The arrangements, by contemporary composers such as Joe Duddell and Paul Englishby, have the precision and intellectual rigour of Soft Machine at their best.”

All you need to do is to tell me the name of the album where the quartet tackle the works of minimalist composers Gavin Bryars, Philip Glass, Michael Nyman, Steve Reich and Terry Riley.

By way of a hint you could visit their website and have a rummage around the place. Once you’ve got the answer pop it in an email to competitions@dgmlive.com marked Softs Comp. Don’t forget to include your postal address in the message. We’ll announce the winner on Friday 25th January.

You can listen to extracts from Dedicated by heading over to the quartet’s myspace site, and you can read my review of the record over on the blog.

Finally, after listening to these arrangements for the saxophone of music by Soft Machine what King Crimson tracks would you nominate for the sax quartet treatment? How about Discipline, Thrak,Vrooom, and LTIA pt III for starters? Just imagine those tunes scored for that uber-sax sound! Send your suggestions to the guestbook please.
