Back in 1972, just days before he was about to go to the USA and the last tour with Boz, Mel and Ian, Robert Fripp was in London’s Command Studios listening to some of the best players in the UK free jazz scene.
He was producing an album that featured pianist Keith Tippett, bassist Harry Miller, cornet player Mark Charig, and trombonist Nick Evans. The album was never released and the master tapes were lost in the mists of time.
Over 35 years later, Nick Evans has found part of the rough stereo mixes for those sessions (which also featured Soft Machine’s Elton Dean, bassist Johnny Dyani and drummer Keith Bailey) and Reel Recordings have just released them.

There’s more information (plus an audio sample) about the album over at the Reel Recordings site. You can also read my review of this UK free jazz extravaganza over on the blog.
If you would like to win a copy of this album all you have to do is answer this simple question. What are the four foundations of the Reel Recordings manifesto? If they’ve just momentarily slipped your mind, then take a look at the label’s manifesto page to refresh your memory. We’re only after the four headings by the way.
Once you’ve done that send your answer and your postal details to competitions@dgmlive.com with ALL STARS in the header (lest you be lost in a world of spam). The winner will be announced on Wednesday 21st January.
