“The last time this song, Three Of A Perfect Pair,was played by the band who originated it,King Crimson in 1984 played here,our very last show was July 11th 1984. Almost 14 years ago to the day!” says Belew of the uncanny coincidences which the KC tour book throws at the players from time to time.
With Montreal representing the end of that particular incarnation of the band it’s apt that the city should mark the completion of the P2 experiment. 34 gigs after they had started out in Nashville earlier in the year, P2 came to rest to Montreal and went out in fine fiery form introducing new themes in Light ConstruKction and Slow House To House.
“This was, without question, the best ProjeKct 2 performance,” Trey Gunn noted in his diary. “We tried a few new things tonight. Robert and I worked up some new “heads’ to improvise around. We also boldly blew into a whole new kind of playing area that we’ve been working on backstage. It’s funny how having something new to play brings, not only more “freshness,” but alertness into the performance...what a great ending and what a great new beginning awaits. Yoi!”
“What an occasion this is,” says a satisfied sounding Belew at the end of what has been a barnstorming show by the team. “My pals, Robert and Trey, have asked me to come out and do one more King Crimson song for you. I think you might agree with me ProjeKct Two is well on its way to turning into the next King Crimson which will happen some time soon we hope. Meanwhile this is a very special evening for us because it’s the end of all of our ProjeKct Two touring for this year. Although watch out in the autumn I think there’s something called ProjeKct Four.”
