It’s a somewhat languorous rendition of House on the first night at Ronnie Scott’s with both Trey and Robert decorating the space created by Ade’s rock steady beats but never really connecting to it somehow. As with previous concerts, this sense of pulling punches could well be a strategy designed to get the performers from one end of the gig to the other. Live Groove has Trey making the first strike of the night with a penetrating solo that is unfortunately slightly undermixed against Robert’s string motifs.
Fripp is on remarkable form during the brief Sector Shift and Gunn is clearly enjoying himself to the max with all kinds of rhapsodic flourishes during X_chayn_jiZ which is made all the more impressive with its dead-stop. There’s some serious sonic mayhem inflicted by Trey during the appropriately titled Disturbance in Sector Q 3 that is well worth investigating. “I’d like to rock out. It’s late at night and I’d like to rock out” says an off-mic but clearly audible familiar Dorset burr prior to an an ear-grabbing set closer, Contrary ConstruKction.
In 1998 when Elephant Talk was really the only online presence for Crim fans to gather, fan Neil Talbot spoke about the pieces that had made an impact with him. Of one he commented “the music moves effortlessly to a slow cortege beat - Fripp plays gorgeous purple harmonies over which Trey plays an achingly beautiful solo. This piece made my scalp tingle and brought tears to my eyes too, and I hope beyond hope that DGM will release a recording of this unforgettable masterpiece.” The piece was of course Thrush and a little over 13 years since he first heard fill the air at Ronnie Scott’s, Neil has his wish.
