What a way to get a gig underway - a dazzling improv followed by a superbly rolling, riotous Thela and then into a glowering, towering rendition of Red. And how about a flawless version of Frame By Frame? Clearly a gig where the Crims are firing on all cylinders. Listen out for an almost funky improv in which Fripp turns in a stunning solo over a laid back groove from the boys in the beat department. Seemingly more spacious than has been the case, after the return of the main theme the ending also benefits from a single sustained note, as though reluctant to let go of the mood. It’s a classic Crim moment. You can hear lots of well-deserved whoops after a particularly muscular outing of Three Of A Perfect Pair and the build in The Talking Drum is especially effective, with Gunn and Belew’s snaking lines slithering over the increasingly busy groove as it climbs toward the resolution of LTIA Pt 2. All told, this is a pretty hot gig indeed!
