First Show
Third date into the first North American tour and the Crims are doing two gigs in one night again. It does make you wonder how they do it. With the first show starting at 9.00pm the quartet hurl themselves into the set with evident enthusiasm. Although the tape quality is pretty variable throughout the show, it’s possible to get a sense of how inventive the material sounds. In an interview with Trouser Press, Belew had said ““What I hope to accomplish eventually is to fit avant-garde sensibilities into pop forms so more people would enjoy them.” Later, speaking to Ron Curtiss after the release of Beat, the guitarist expanded on that notion. “I think that’s the band’s natural leaning, toward avant-garde music. For me, when you add good strong melodies to that, then you have that combination…I sure like it when it happens.” And to be fair to Belew, it’s happening plenty of times in this performance.
