Three days after leaving Edinburgh, the team performed three nights at the Olympia in Paris. However, the eagle-eyed Crim connoisseur will note their absence here due to licensing difficulties. Happily, the final two shows of the European leg of the tour are here to enjoy. The highlights to these ears include the remarkably tender opening with Robert’s chamber music accompanied by Mel’s flute and Tony’s bowed bass. Absolutely beguiling, it makes one wonder what might have happened had this area been more fully explored. As it is, there’s plenty to be going on with in the regular setlist. Larks’ Tongues Part I is very much on target with its unexpected dynamics, complex and contrasting juxtapositions of time, tone, and timbre, as well as some plain old-fashioned rocking out. And not for the first time on the tour, there should probably be a health warning issued before punters listen to Easy Money, The Letters, Sailor’s Tale, One More Red Nightmare, and Starless in a row. There’s a good chance that taken together they will take the top of your bonce clean off.
