Spare a thought for Jakko Jakszyk, who not only had the challenge of tackling those fiendishly difficult cross-picking parts for Larks’ Tongues In Aspic Part 1 but then has to dive straight into the equally complex figures of Pictures Of A City straight after. However, without any on-stage warming up his vocal pipes, Jakko has to throw himself into a raucous, full-stretch reading of Peter Sinfield’s dystopic descriptions of New York circa 1969. And because this is King Crimson, that’s immediately followed by the softer and more plaintive parts of Jakko’s vocal range on A Scarcity Of Miracles. This beautiful contemporary Crimson ballad started out life on the Jakszyk, Fripp & Collins KC ProjeKct, a few years before the formation of the new seven-piece incarnation. This is the song's first live performance, which only made it onto the set list three times during this European tour, making this gorgeously sensitive reading all the more special. Fripp’s solo is a lovely example of how much heart and soul he can put into this song. Not for nothing were these shows in Edinburgh regarded by some band members as the best of the tour.
