With King Crimson on hold since their live reunion of 2008, the arrival of this unexpected instalment of the ProjeKct series in 2011, containing a suite of finely crafted, mid-paced songs, stood in stark contrast to previous releases bearing the ProjeKct title.

The catalysing force this time is guitarist/vocalist Jakko Jakszyk, the only non-Crimson member present, who took the results of a single day of improvising between himself and Fripp and developed that raw material into a series of songs which Fripp himself would later describe as “a stunning sonic tapestry, carefully woven and satisfying to the ear.”

In addition to the soundscapes that underpin much of the album, Fripp leans into the yearning romanticism that has often been present in his work, with clean, sparse lines carving an aching melancholy into the material.

Mel Collins, playing with Fripp for the first time since his guest appearance on King Crimson’s Red in 1974 similarly adds a haunting melodicism that sweeps eloquently into the spaces created by his colleagues.

At the time of its release, Fripp observed that A Scarcity Of Miracles was "one of my favourite albums of those where I am a determining element. It has the Crimson gene, but it is not quite KC.” Nevertheless, the album, which also features Tony Levin and Gavin Harrison throughout, can definitely be regarded as a precursor to the new incarnation of King Crimson that would later emerge.

Not only were all of the personnel on the album drafted into the new line-up of Crimson in 2014, but both The Light Of Day and the title track, A Scarcity Of Miracles were featured in the new band’s setlist when King Crimson returned to active service that year.

Robert Fripp’s sleeve notes for A Scarcity Of Miracles.

The beginning of A Scarcity Of Miracles was an afternoon meeting of two guitaring pals in SoundWorld I of the crumbling DGM HQ, part of the Village Store and Butcher’s Shop on a Wiltshire country road. A meeting with no expectations: extemporising and improvising hold open a space so the future may present itself within it. Jakko took away the sound files, developed the ideas; Mel heard unplayed sax waiting to be given voice; Gavin and Trev were willing to contribute; hence JF&C with L&H.

At this point, unexpectedly, the project became a ProjeKct. Unexpected, but not surprising given the Crimson gene pool. And, for the first time since 1981, the gene pool drawn upon is more English than American, in ratio 4:1. This unexpectedness is welcome: it suggests more is going on than could be predicated merely on what has gone before. Yet, once here, there is familiarity; like meeting a close member of the family for the first time.

1000 Club

The One Thousand Club is an exclusive Club for long-term King Crimson fans, who wish to support the continued work of this site, and value the ongoing work of the King Crimson archives. We hugely value the support of the 1,000 members, which does much to make the online archiving possible – and, with the redesigned site, have increased the benefits and interaction.

  • UP TO $750 FREE DOWNLOADS a year.

In practice, this is close to unlimited downloads – certainly enough to download everything that is added to the site in a year, and much more. Build yourself the authoritative King Crimson collection, and then advise others on the hidden gems you discover.

  • FREE STREAMING.

1,000 CLUB Members are now able to stream all the music on this site for free, with similar access to the DGMLive catalogue that is added to the Nugs.net site.

  • BI-MONTHLY ONLINE MEETINGS

Every two months, DGM will arrange an online meeting, where 1000 Club members can hear and see what is upcoming and cooking behind the scenes in DGM Soundworld. It is also your chance to make suggestions about what you want to see in the future.

  • WEEKDAY APHORISM CARDS

Every weekday, Monday to Friday, beginning on 1st February, 1000 Club members will receive an email featuring an “Aphorism of the Day”. Robert Fripp’s three sets of Aphorism cards have been hugely popular. An online version of those cards to inspire us each work day.

  • SPECIAL user profile

We have designed a special user logo for 1,000 Club-members, similar to the one for the core DGMLive team. With their special access to all the downloads on the site, we encourage 1,000 Club members to curate the site - sharing their knowledge and insights by placing reviews and comments and favourites.

  • 1000 CLUB PLAYLISTS

1000 Club members have a unique ability to make publicly available playlists on DGMLive. Everyone has different favourites, a chance to help new visitors and even die-hard fans to discover hidden gems lurking within the site.

  • Why is it called the 1,000 Club?

Because membership is strictly limited to exactly 1,000 members. Once it is full, there will be a waiting list and any new members can only join if someone chooses to leave.

  • Why the number 1,000?

The number is partly based on Kevin Kelly's notion of the "one thousand true fans" that support a band or artist. We reward those fans by offering them free downloads, as well as other goodies. In return, we ask them to use their enhanced position to review those downloads, help curate the site, and make recommendations to new users and the DGM archivists.

  • How do I join?

There is an annual subscription of $150 a year (varying slightly by territory for sales tax/VAT reasons). Places are available on a first-come first-served basis. For further details, or to be placed on the waiting list, please email alex@dgmlive.com.

  • IT'S YOUR CLUB.

'Where next' for the 1,000 Club is entirely up to the members. We are open to suggestions. Take the idea and run with it.
