Command Studios

King Crimson
London
21 Sep 1971

"Now what we're going to do...once with the oboe and once without it and then we're finished for the evening" said Robert Fripp in 1971 on the secret track appended to Islands.

We all know the version with Robin Miller's beautiful oboe part but Mister Stormy has revisited the original tapes and blown the dust off this rather lovely alternative where the oboe is only faintly heard, picked up on the microphones placed around the strings.

Listening via headphones reveals the rumbles, bumps, clicks, and extraneous unwanted noises that were a feature of Command Studios. "Excelencio" says one of the string players at the conclusion of the take. As you do.

This track is available on Mr Stormy's bumper collection. His fifth year of treasures from the murky, cavernous DGM archives, is now available for download.
