Salisbury Cathedral 3 June 1997
Much of what happens in the first half of the second day at Salisbury Cathedral is akin to a vessel traveling across a vast body of water, taking soundings as it goes, gauging the depths, and sending out sonar pings to look for potential shapes and formations. So little is known and visible when compared to what lies waiting to be explored.
That speculative sifting continues for much of this lengthy suite, gradually layering the air with frond-like notes, slowly unfurling, catching the afternoon light filtered through the stained glass.
Near the halfway mark, however, the keyboard-like textures that have dominated much of the performance so far give way to a slow-motion cascade of lead guitar lines, whose fiery sparks leap into shifting depths surrounding them.
This is slow music. There’s no drama or showmanship. Building a space within a space seems to be what’s happening here. When it comes, the final 20-minute piece feels something like a blessing, quietly resplendent and calm, ushering in the end of something rather special.
