WETTON GLAM & CRIM

Over on the John Wetton Guestbook, DGMLive regular George Bruner asked John about his time out with Roxy Music, and this is what John had to say.

“The simple truth of it is that Roxy always had to have a really good rhythm sec(tion) ’cos the top line hadn’t got a clue what it was doing. The only glam associated with Roxy was the Totty, which was top hole. All social and entertainment arrangements were spectacular, glamorous, and Callipygian--in diametric contrast to poor old Crimso, who would attract a few shabby old geezers with beards and threadbare pullies, struggling to the Holiday Inn with armfuls of ghastly old jazz albums. Big difference was that the musos handling the KC top lines were way more qualified than anyone in the RM ’camp’ (and I mean that word in its ’Boy Scout’ context), and I still contend that ’Red’ is a fabulous record, it’s a pity we never got to do the follow-up, now that would have put the cat amongst the pigeons. Would I have swapped my year of endless love with the Roxettes for more trainspotting with the smelly legions of Schizoid anoraks? Only time will tell."
