My thanks to Nighthealer for sending in this account of Travis & Fripp's gig in Wimborne last night.
"I was lucky enough to attend last night’s Travis and Fripp concert in Wimborne Minster. (I live in Brighton, about 2hrs drive away). The concert lasted about an hour, and they played about 6 separate pieces.
I haven’t heard the Thread album, so I’m afraid I can’t say whether they were new pieces or stuff from that album. I did recognise the last piece though, which was a variant of ’At the End of Time’. Anyway it was all splendid haunting stuff! Theo played flute on some tracks and soprano sax on others, both equally effective!
Half-way through Robert stepped up to the microphone and spoke to the audience! He explained that the gig was a memorial to a friend of the Fripp family, and local Wimborne businessman, named Tony Jones.
There was a good audience for the concert, the church was practically full. Some of the audience seemed to be old gentlemen who’d be more at home on the bowling green. Mind you, Robert looks a bit like that these days too :-) I guess they were friends or relatives of Tony Jones. After the gig I overheard one say, "Well it’s an unusual style of music but it was quite good". A pretty good summary I would say!"
