When Robert fripp began making ambient music with Brian Eno on No Pussyfooting back in 1973, his Les Paul was looped through two Revox reel-to-reels. But for the last decade he has used a digital delay and MIDI set-up giving his guitar a smooth, synthetic string sound. He has produced some beautiful music this way, especially A Blessing Of Tears from ’95 which commemorated his mother’s death. That the highlight of this set is Easter Sunday, an anomalous tape loop piece from 1983 with flamenco-like overdubs and a buzzing, twisting solo, makes one wonder how much creative mileage is left in his current creative approach. Fripp’s bizarre vocodered recitations on the title track usher in a rare example of his unique lead lines snaking across this gently ebbing, airbrushed backdrop, but overall the more recent pieces are virtually interchangeable – similarly paced and differing only subtly in mood.
