My thanks to jfrancis for sending me this link to a recent article in the Financial Times about the decline of the major labels.  He writes "The ever-rapacious record companies have now decided to try to take every last dime the artist makes:

"Record labels are trying to persuade new artists to sign deals covering the gamut of recording, publishing, management, performance and merchandising."

They’ve no intention of going away quietly. And sadly, people are falling for it."
