NEWLYN SOUNDSCAPE GOES LIVE

Robert Fripp’s soundscape at St. Peter’s Church, in Newlyn, has been uploaded.  This was Robert’s first live appearance in the UK since sending shivers down the reclining spines of new age neo-hippies at The Big Chill in Eastnor in August, and the first in the December Suite series of concerts.

DGM engineer Alex Mundy describes the online edition as “Over a hundred minutes of damn good stuff!” and by Jove, he’s not wrong.

Notwithstanding a quick burst of flash photography before things got underway, the attention of a potential autograph hunter during a promenade, and freezing conditions, the guitarist summed the day up thus “A very attentive, engaged & present audience. This was a privileged event.”

The gig has been edited by Alex and Robert after it was discovered that the recording level on the hard drive had been set too high resulting in distortion.  Whilst there are some pops and clicks occasionally audible I would doubt that these would get in the way of enjoying this concert.  There are several times when I was listening to it today when I was strongly reminded of themes from No Pussyfooting, the track Exposure, Bringing Down The Light (from The First Day) and A Blessing of Tears.  If you like your soundscapes strong on melody and depth of feeling then you’ll certainly find this concert a must-have.
