Frippertronics for the troops
Every so often, Robert Fripp returns to the deep ambient
rhythm-less world he first explored with Brian Eno back in the 70s, as if to
cleanse himself from the rigours of King Crimson.
On this voyage his fellow traveller is Theo Travis from the Soft Machine tribe whose flute and saxophone tones provide a hollow, resonant accompaniment for Fripp’s thoughtfully dissembled guitar chords. Ocassional clusters of notes throw aural shapes making ripples across the soundscapes. But it’s not as soporific as it sounds – mainly because it was recorded in one day, something that created its own tension which has simply been enhanced by the subsequent “treatment” by Porcupine Tree’s Steven Wilson, adding a rawness to the impressionist texture.
