Keith Tippett is playing a three-night residency during August at The Vortex Jazz Club in London. Each evening showcases a different aspect of the composer and pianist’s work across contemporary classical, jazz and improvised music.

Tippett will be best known to King Crimson enthusiasts for his striking contributions to In The Wake Of Poseidon, Lizard and Islands. Robert Fripp, who in turn produced several Tippett-related releases, (including Septober Energy by the 50-piece Centipede) was so impressed by Tippett’s work and musical vision that he offered the pianist co-ownership of King Crimson.
The programme will include Keith Tippett’s string quartet, commissioned by the Elysian Quartet in 2008. In the second half Tippett’s piano quintet ‘Linuckea’ will be performed. This was commissioned by the Kreutzer Quartet in 1995.
With:
Trumpet & flugel horn - Fulvio Sergato
Alto sax and soprano sax - Sam Mayne
Alto sax, flute - James Gardner-Bateman
Trombone - Kieran McCleod
Trombone - Robby Harvey
Bass - Tom McCready
Drums and percussion - Peter Fairclough
Piano, composer - Keith Tippett
For full details go to The Vortex jazz club website.
Meanwhile, Keith Tippett is appearing on a new forthcoming album with Daniel Pennie and AD Chivers (of the Michael Giles MAD Band). There’s a rather fine video of the trio in action here.
