Trey Gunn celebrates his 45th birthday today. Since
leaving Crimso at the end of 2003, Trey has been involved in a series
of collaborations including the multi-media project Quodia and the terrifyingly powerful KTU (with Pat Mastelotto, avant-accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen, and Sumuli Kosminen on samplers).

However he’s probably best known for his trail-blazing work with King Crimson and the ProjeKcts. Although
in the early days of the Double Trio many folks had trouble figuring
out what Trey was playing by the ProjeKct’s had connected to the future
no-one could be in any doubt about the strength and depth of Gunn’s
musical contribution.
Outside
of the devastatingly beautiful solo on The Deception of the Thrush,
picking a favourite Trey moment is always hard task given the wide
range of choices open to us. If pressed
though, I’d have to say that the dazzling bassline on the opening
of The ConstruKction of Light always makes my jaw drop – especially the
live version If you
