Trey Gunn celebrates his 45th birthday today.  Since leaving Crimso at the end of 2003, Trey has been involved in a series of collaborations including the multi-media project Quodia and the terrifyingly powerful KTU (with Pat Mastelotto, avant-accordionist Kimmo Pohjonen, and Sumuli Kosminen on samplers).

However he’s probably best known for his trail-blazing work with King Crimson and the ProjeKcts.  Although in the early days of the Double Trio many folks had trouble figuring out what Trey was playing by the ProjeKct’s had connected to the future no-one could be in any doubt about the strength and depth of Gunn’s musical contribution.

Outside of the devastatingly beautiful solo on The Deception of the Thrush, picking a favourite Trey moment is always hard task given the wide range of choices open to us.  If pressed though,  I’d have to say that the dazzling bassline on the opening of The ConstruKction of Light always makes my jaw drop – especially the live version   If you want to know why my chin is permanently bruised by this particular section take a peek at Trey in action over on his website in the video section. Scroll down to the QT video of KC at Paris 2000.

Which Trey Gunn moments get your jaw on the floor?  Let us know on the guestbook.
