Hip hip and hooray and a Happy Birthday to Trey Gunn today. Arguably the most important addition to King Crimson since Adrian Belew joined the band, stick player and warr guitarist Gunn will blowing the candles out on his cake as we speak.
Like many folks, I loved Trey’s work in Crimson and the ProjeKcts – a player who didn’t appear worried about whatever was thrown his way. Like many people I first came across him when he worked with Fripp and Sylvian.

I recall the jaw-drop moment when lines I assumed had been played by Fripp were being performed by Gunn. Even recently on the guestbook here we’ve had folks attributing Chromatic Fantasy from the RFSQ to Fripp when it was TG.
Thinking what my favourite TG moment might be is difficult as there’s so many great lines and moments to chose from – his solo on The Deception of the Thrush in whatever incarnation it’s played never fails to raise a tingle along the spine.
Then again, what about that snaking bassline he plays throughout the title track of The ConstruKction of Light?

So what if push comes to shove would be your favourite Trey moment, and how would you describe his contribution to Crimson?
