Earthbound stands as one of the most gritty and powerful live recordings of its era, showcasing King Crimson's Islands line-up comprising Boz Burrell, Mel Collins, Robert Fripp, and Ian Wallace. In a manner that surpassed many of their contemporaries, the band pushed the boundaries of their music to the limits.
Originally released in 1972, Earthbound consisted of a collection of deliberately lo-fi live recordings from King Crimson's Islands era tour in the USA. It was among the earliest, if not the first, "official bootlegs" to be issued by a major rock band.
Today, with Robert Fripp and Mel Collins having appeared in the 2014/2021 King Crimson line-ups, and the music from the Islands era being a regular feature of their live shows, the interest in Earthbound and that particular period of King Crimson's music is arguably higher now, fifty years after its original release, than it was at the time.
