DIRECTNESS AND AUTHORITY THAT COMES FROM YOUR EXPERIENCE

Sent to a respected colleague this morning...

The power in your essay is that it comes from you. This is your experience, your reflections on your experience, how you engage with your experience. It is authentic.

Somehow this has greater power for me than reasoned arguments and presentations, however superb they may be. There is a directness and authority that comes from your experience.

The Guitar Circle book is itself a primer, a report on 35 years of Guitar Craft and Guitar Circle activities and courses. The direct experience of those at the courses is key. Something takes place way beyond anything we bring to it individually. Perhaps, all those on courses comprise an instrument that is played by a greater individuality?

As with King Crimson, fortunately I know that what goes on has nothing to do with me. (This is a problem with some exceptional players I have known).
The challenge, both on GC courses with many whose facility in the English language was limited, and at David and Robert’s speaking presentations, is how to convey notions and ideas of value, in Anglo Saxon and words of one and two syllables? How to explain the essence of a practice or discipline as if to a ten-year old?
