One of the most unlikely performances on the popular UK chart television show Top Of The Pops was delivered by a temporary lineup of King Crimson. They mimed to their early 1970 single release, "Cat Food." Despite their appearance on TOTP, the band's first and only attempt at entering the singles market without an accompanying album release didn't result in a chart-topping hit in the UK or worldwide. However, the single, accompanied by its unconventional instrumental B-side, "Groon," has garnered enduring appeal among King Crimson fans.
A lengthier version of "Cat Food" would later appear on the band's second studio album, "In The Wake Of Poseidon," released in May 1970. Additionally, a live rendition of "Groon" became a standout track on the "Earthbound Live" album. "Cat Food" also made a triumphant return to King Crimson's repertoire during the band's 2019 world tour, delivering a powerful rendition.
