Bill Bruford has spoken to DGMLive about the forthcoming Winterfold dvd featuring his old band, Bruford on the BBC Rock Goes To College Slot. I’d had a tip-off that Bill was busy working on sprucing up the footage and got in touch yesterday to ask him how it was looking and sounding after all these years.
“I’m struck mostly by the sheer bravado, the fearlessness, the recklessness, and the panache with which the music is despatched by these hyper-confident young people. Who are these guys? Is that me up there? Why are they playing like this? And why don’t people play like this now?
I’m occasionally asked if I ever listen back to my past musical efforts. The usual answer is ‘Not if I can help it’; the outcome is too painful. It’s a bit like looking back at old photo albums. It’s not only that the old crushed velvet flares you wore back then looked ridiculous, but that you didn’t know they looked ridiculous.”
Filmed on March 7th 1979, the Bruford band consisted of Dave Stewart (keyboards), Alan Holdsworth (guitar), Annette Peacock (vocals), Jeff Berlin (bass) and Bill on drums and infectious enthusiasm.

The DVD should be available on Winterfold Reocrds late summer / early autumn.
