Ben Crowe, of Crimson Guitars, will be known to site
visitors via RF’s diary as the supplier of the Robert Fripp Custom model. As well as keeping a chronicle of his building of RF's guitar, Ben also keeps a regular diary on his website of progress he’s
making on various models in production.
Even a complete non-player and complete
tech-luddite such as I cannot help but be impressed by the level of care and
detail he takes in each of the models he is making.
But what, I wondered, would be Ben’s choice of KC and RF cuts to take away to the mythical desert island if the ship went down. In a thrice Ben dropped his spokeshave to clue us in on his preferred choices.
1: Firepower (from The First Day by Fripp & Sylvian)
Such a tense sound to the song. The whole album is amazing
Robert and Trey Gunn drive this. Live DVD adds Pat M and Michael Brook to the
fold.
2: Larks Tongues in Aspic Part 2/ Pt3 /Pt4
its a cheat but really you need to hear them all as one
3: Fracture (from Starless and Bible Black)
Absolute must-have Crimson
4: Starless (from Red)
The tone of Roberts Les Paul is just so mournful, Its a
beautiful song
5: Red (Red)
Opening track and a powerful one at that... plus they used
it in EastEnders Noisy Neighbour storyline
6: Elephant Talk (from Discipline)
Adrian Belew and his incredible Elephant sound! My favourite
studio album.
7: Three of a Perfect Pair (from Three of a Perfect Pair)
Single... surely not! First Crim tune I learned to play.
Always amazes me, Adrian playing solo on acoustic is a sight to see.
8: Midnight Blue (from Love Cannot Bear)
Soundscapes and beauty. It has this amazing way of drawing
you into the various weaves, constantly changing and always involves you.
9: Happy With What You Have To Be Happy With (from The Power To Believe)
Great Riff was my favourite of the album, Fripp and Belew as
always working brilliantly
10: Heroes (from Heroes by David Bowie)
Probably the first time I actually heard Robert, Feedback
control at his finest... all done before the invention of a sustainer. It’s a
beautiful melody, haunting
Not content with choosing ten tracks, Ben went against the
grain of our usual guests in this spot and cited ten absolutely, positively must-have
albums featuring the Great Roberto.

And a cheeky one? “Purely for laughs, Einstein’s Relatives where RF states "Its dear old Uncle Bobby" Finally, what about the old last book / last album double whammy? “Last book I read/am still reading is Cumpanio's how to build acoustic guitars. This is something I read from cover to over about twice a year. You'll always learn something! Last album I heard was Jakko M. Jakszyk's latest, The Bruised Romantic Glee Club with Robert guesting on some tracks. This is the perfect album to start a day to!”
