MISTER STORMY WRITES...

Yesterday we had a query on the gb about hiss on some of our bootleg sourced concerts. Jean-Michel asks:

I’ve just burnt the bootleg CD of the 1972 november Oxford concert...

It has a lot of hiss in my humble opinion, much more than the Hull november concert which are perhaps of the same sources (?)

Is it normal ?

Do you only transfer tape when it came from a bootleg or do you make a noise reduction treatment which seem missing in Oxford ?

Thanks for your answer if you have time...

Jean-Michel

To which Mister Stormy responds...

Jean- Michel,
The bootleg cassettes are from different sources, and depending on the generation of the tape, the hiss can be more or less.
When it comes to taking hiss away, I prefer to err on the side of caution, so as not to take away the possibility of any high end that might be lurking there.
You can make a recording a little too closed in and boxy if you are not careful.
Best
Stormy
