This is the third generation of the DGMLive website – and it will undoubtedly continue to evolve. There are already features that we have planned but not yet implemented.
The role of the website itself has changed over time. Twenty years ago, DGMLive might have been seen as the primary place where fans would go for news and discussions. Much of this, of course, now happens on social media.
The core of the website might therefore better be seen as a library – for both music and words. Somewhere filled with a large number of treasures waiting to be discovered, as well as those still being added on a daily basis. So while there may not always be exciting daily “news”, there are always daily treats. As well as the ongoing nuggets unearthed by Stormy Mundy.
Finding ways to present such a large body of material is an ongoing challenge. Just today, we were discussing the fascinating essays that Sid Smith has written to accompany the various reissues – many of which have yet to be added to the site. It really does feel akin to a library or an art gallery, wandering into different rooms with so much to see.
And just like a gallery, I am sure we will continue to find ever better ways to display things.
Another way to view the website is the centre of an online spider’s web – a nerve centre sending out information which many people will see without the need to ever visit the site. Which is absolutely fine. As part of that, we are entering into an exciting partnership with Nugs.net, who will increasingly carry the same audio archives as DGMLive.
That means that those who wish will be able to take advantage of their streaming, download or CD-on-demand services. Another way of accessing our archives.
One feature which we will be adding to the homepage in the next few weeks is “1000 Club playlists” – where 1000 Club members recommend their top ten items from the website. 1000 Club members are better qualified than anyone to act as tour guides to their particular favourites. We would therefore encourage everyone to make their top ten list – and we will feature some of these each day on the homepage.
The new site goes live in precisely one hour and twenty minutes.
At which point the next stage of the journey begins.
