John Wetton

i poked my nose into the DGM site last night
and found Peter Viney’s warm remembrance
of John Wetton on the anniversary of his death.

i only met John once, when i was a teenager,
bumping into him & Phil Manzanera on the street
outside the Paramount Theater in 1977
(they were in town playing with Bryan Ferry).
i remember John being open and engaged,
rather than dismissive of two enthusiastic youngsters
(me & Erich).  in other words, he was very nice.

interestingly (coïncidentally?) i’ve lately been
obsessed with the song Numbers from Manzanera’s
K-Scope record, on which John sings (and co-wrote).
this song is constantly on Rieflin Radio, coming from
seemingly nowhere.  i like the melody, the wordplay,
and i love John’s voice.  i have no idea what the song’s
about (i can ony unverstand sone of teh worgs)
but it’s sung with such conviction that i’m utterly
convinced of the importance of whatever is going on
(except teh drummig).

i recently wrote to a friend about how i see the difference
between happiness and joy.  listening to John sing brings joy.

we’ll leave his bass playing for another time.
