Toad's Place New Haven United States

His most extensive solo outing since 1979, Fripp’s bleeping and droning was carefully built up and layered via his trusty Revox tape recorders in much the same way as Fripp and Eno’s No Pussyfooting. Indeed there’s an echo of the early lines from The Heavenly Music Corporation in the opening moods of Loop IV.

Whilst the music here is taken from an audience recording, Alex has intercut Robert’s own cassette recording of the lecture/Q&A sections of the evening and spliced it all together. Though the crowd noise seems like it’s in direct competition with the music on Loop I, this does fall back as Loop II evolves.

The first part of the evening is spent with Robert setting up the backdrop for his later soloing and it’s an interesting upfront glimpse into this period and quite a stark contrast to the way the present soundscapes work. The Q&A section has Robert sounding very relaxed fielding all kinds of comments and questions about monads, tetrads, systems of working, King Crimson and the industry from a very earnest and interested audience. He’s even to be heard saying nice things about Sam Alder! To these ears though, it’s the soloing that get the juices flowing in an exhilarating rush that gives this show a real tingle factor.

I was there!
I was at this performance - still have my ticket stub!  I also recorded part of this show on a microcassette player in my shirt pocket, but I was right up front and didn’t want to make a scene flipping the tape, so I only got about 30 minutes on my tape.  I am so glad this full recording is available, and the quality is quite good - well worth $10 - rather ironic since the ticket for the show was only $6.50.  It’s great to re-experience this perfo...

YES I KNEW IT GREAT RECORDING
I HEARD THE WHOLE THING  AND HAD TO MAKE ANOTHER COMENT.This is a great example of  the transition between the early to mid frippertronics   i hear robert  creating sounds  that i later hear  on beat and three of a perfect  pair  ..I hope to hear more of these  early soundscape   recordings.

My question answered
Wonderful to see this event available; a clear window to a point in time. I’m the "gentleman with the glasses" who asked the final question that led to the response about Robert’s trip to Brussels. What’s not captured on tape is the woman who was standing behind me berating me for asking such a question. Highly recommended to any Frippertronics enthusiast.
