The Guvernment Toronto Canada

Trey Gunn describes The Guvernment as a “Very wild venue,” going on to note its resemblance to a huge dance/disco/proto-industrial hall. Which might explains John Sinks’ announcement over the PA at the start of the first of two gigs in Canada, that while the band ask for no smoking and photography during the show, they encourage everyone to dance.

Gunn goes on to observe “I think due to the nature of the venu, we veered into unexplored industrial areas tonight. The show was very heavy and dark (except for Adrian’s acoustic guitar and voice pieces). The lighting was also very moody, with vari-lights spinning out strange patterns across the stage and audience. All in all it was a good show, though it felt as though we never quite got in synch. Robert was thrown off at the beginning of the show because his gear was all out of whack. But, a professional recovery was in order and we sailed anyway. Adrian said that every time he has played this place terrible things happen to the guitar sounds,so I guess we came out of it ahead of the game.”

The team certainly sound ahead of the game on the rhapsodic introduction to Sus-tayn-Z which dovetails so neatly into one of Gunn’s most potent, telling solos of the tour to date. Belew keeps things on the boil, thrashing and crashing the V-kit for all he’s worth. It’s mad, baaad, but also beautiful and brilliant. When Fripp takes off the strings and joins Gunn in the lead soloing, remarkable things happen with three people blending into one being.

“And now for something completely different,” says a smiling Belew ahead of his four-number acoustic set in the middle of the show, “words and melody!”

All in all, a diverse but cracking show!
