Undoubtedly the most expansive and dramatic of the soundscapes on this leg of the tour, it hovers munificently in the hall. If you could record the act of extending goodwill, it would sound like this. After a surging run through Level Five and The ConstruKction Of Light with some lyrical variations on the vocal intro Belew announces “This being there last night of our Japanese tour is very special for all of us and that’s why the crew gave me the wrong words.” Tonight’s Power To Believe III is a remarkable beast with Gunn’s yearning soloing seemingly repaying a debt of thanks to the opening soundscape, bringing that part of the concert to a stunning conclusion. After thanking the crew and promoters, and some well-received encores King Crimson’s Japanese tour was completed. It would another 12 years before a very different iteration of King Crimson would return to Japan.
For his part, Robert Fripp had this to say about the last gig in his diary. “Tonights performance was solid & enjoyable. The onstage sound would have been very hard without my right headphone and, even so, the beginning sound was very difficult. For some reason, my volume appeared to have become much quieter. This took me two pieces to deal with, during which there was little time available to make adjustments. But, overall a good-average Crimson performance with strong individual moments in places & the discovery/invention of some new wrinkles.” This show was mixed from the multitrack ADATs by Alex Mundy.
