So this is perhaps the most important effect of the Exeter churchscapes on myself, and, my son and my wife and even my usually sceptic, only classical music-loving dad enjoyed these hour very much - what more could i hope for?”

I recall this gig for several special reasons - this was the first time I’d seen Robert Fripp since the League of Gentlemen tour, and I’d had to rush down to Exeter from just south of Bristol immediately after returning from holiday in Crete. I recall this gig for several special reasons - this was the first time I’d seen Robert Fripp since the League of Gentlemen tour, and I’d had to rush down to Exeter from just south of Bristol immediately after returning from holiday in Crete. As it happened, I arrived early and had opportunity to speak with Sid Smith beforehand, but also catch a glimpse from the doorway of the venue of a special moment - Robert soundchecking in the empty Chapter House of the Cathedral. The gig itself was utterly mesmerising, both in terms of the music played and the atmosphere evoked, and the moment will stay with me forever. It is the only time in my life that live music, in this exquisitely beautiful form, has actually been so emotionally stirring as to move me to tears.
