25 February 1997
With the Double Trio having played their last concert in Philadelphia in August 1996, the next phase in the great turning wheel of Crimson finds Ade, Trey and Robert in SIR studios in Nashville the following February, working through a number of ideas.
This excerpt from the writing sessions for what was intended to be the follow-up to Thrak is no vague jam session. Instead, we hear the three quarters of the KC string section launch a regimented assault on the complex intertwining riffs and rhythms that would eventually find their way into Larks Tongues In Aspic PtIV, Level Five and ConstruKction Of Light.
When the full Double Trio line up reconvened in April 1997, these interconnected themes and ideas failed to find any significant degree of purchase during the fortnight’s ill-fated rehearsals. Looking back, and hearing the extent of their development, it seems inexplicable that these were rejected at the time and would have to wait until after the fraKctalising and the eventual dissolution of the Double Trio to find their eventual audience.
