Dear Mr. Burrell
I first saw Crimson in 1970 in Detroit. You were terrific. The old songs and new songs. What a voice. When you sang a bluesey version of Court....Wow! I caught all of the Detroit shows and haven’t missed one since (no matter who sang and played bass.)
Years later Mr. Fripp was touring record stores. It was an autograph session. The guy in line in front of me asked RF about you, rolling his eyes and expecting something negative because of the Bad Company thing. Mr. Fripp said "Hey, Bad Company is one hell of a Rock N Roll Band."

The Boz/Mel/Ian/Robert incarnation of Crim has been the most underrated of all. But the indelible influence of that lineup comes distinctly from the funkiness that Boz Burrell brought to the table that has been felt throughout to present day and beyond (indeed, who can sit still when you hear the bass line to bad Company’s Rock And Roll Fantasy ?). This along with his truly unique vocals will be sorely missed. So long, Boz...thanks for everything.

This is, indeed, a great recording. I find myself humming this tune
quite often, and I find it to be one of the ’cooler’ Crimson tracks.
Boz gave King Crimson some soul and a bit of a different dimension
that has never reappeared. I prefer the music of this incarnation of
King Crimson to that of the early eighties band, at the very least. I
simply listen to the live bootlegs from 1971 and 1972 more often,
period. Boz had a good feel for the bass and, to agree with
Ian Wallace’s comments,he held a good "base" for the band. He did a
remarkable job, considering the circumstances. Maybe he would have
become a virtuoso by staying in Crimson, who knows? He definitely had
that capability, but maybe he had the restraint to ignore that

One of the problems of 70’s bands is that the members are growing older. Crimso appeared to have a charmed life when it came to longevity of members however I have read the sad news of the passing of Boz. He always appeared to be the poor relation of Crimso, joining as a vocalist and ending up learning and playing bass as well without the massive musical credentials of his peers but I personally loved his smoky vocals and he seemed to bring a sense of mischief to the ice precise nature of King Crimson.A sad day indeed."Beneath the wind turned wave, infinite peace, Islands join hands ’neath heaven’s sea.

Islands didnt really do much for me as a recording, so it was with some reservation that I purchased the Ladies of the Road live CD set. I was just floored by Boz’s live performances.. On Islands, he barely raised his voice above a whisper the entire album... On the live CD set he breathes new life into some of the earlier KC material that rocks much harder than Islands.. I believe his vocals of Get Thy Bearings, Pictures of A City, and Cirkus are better than the originals. He might be the best vocalist KC has ever had.. And you’d never know it from Islands..

What a sad loss to the Crimson world and how unexpected too. Boz Burrell definitely left his mark on King Crimson with their innovative "Islands" album as well as a multitude of live performances with the band (Check out "Earthbound" or the gigs at the Zoom Club to see just how powerful this band line-up was). He definitely had a distinct voice ranging from poignant and quiet to edgy and ballsy. Let’s not forget that he was one of the founding members of the legendary supergroup Bad Company. Well, Boz, thanks for the music and memories. You will definitely be missed. I hope to see you in Heaven someday. Yes, I pray I will see you there. Rest in Peace, Boz. By the way, the "Ladies Of The Road" remix featured here as a tribute is AWESOME!!! Thanks DGMLive for this amazing track.

I always liked what Boz did with King Crimson. I never understood the criticisms lain against his contributions and maybe even mentioning such is making too much of it but i just honestly feel any is too much. I thought he was just fine for what they were and can enjoy their work to this day which is why i was listening to the KCCC release from Detroit 1971 maybe just as Boz was leaving us all behind but at any rate on that same day before hearing.If you’re clapping clap in time,don’t mess us about.

I heard this song on KLOS, a Los Angeles Radio station, when it was first released. I immediately went out and bought as many KC records as I could find. The song’s effect was intoxicating and I have been drunk on the music of King Crimson ever since. Ladies Of The Road is simply a brilliant song.

I remember the first time I heard Islands how taken I was with its overall mood. We have now lost the man who I feel was the soul of this particluar album in Crim history. That period of time (71-72) brought back to us a revitalized KC of which the achievements of the bass player and vocalist can’t be understated. His renderings of such tunes as "Pictures Of A City" and "Schizoid Man" brought new life to these great classics!! I just wish to say now how much you will be missed as a dear friend who came through my headphones to comfort me when the need arose. Rest In Peace Boz and to your family they have my deepest sympathies. The world has truly lost a great musician and friend.

Yesterday night the new of Boz’s passing away shocked me. In Spanish language, Boz sounds almost identical to "voice". I’ll always recall his voice when on an island or close to the sea, seagulls will understand my mood then. See you Boz, wherever you’ll be, and even better, hear you Boz in my island, on me! The mighty Crim has always had a touch of danger... Ladies of the Road take the danger a shade below the waistline. Boz, Fripp and Collins respectively contribute rampant, unhinged performances to this picture of life on the road. Reading about Boz today, what really was moving to me was what happened after Boz’ first gig with Crimson. Already having doubts, he went for a long walk around Frankfurt, encountering as it happens a cricket match. Somehow on that walk Boz found the courage to keep going. The reviewer noted that from then on, Boz grew stronger on each of the successive nights of the tour. That’s how I’d like to remember him. Godspeed...

Boz, you put an ecstatically lively, very visceral, gritty, grounded unique sound in King Crimson that it did not have before;
like a passionate child alone who suddenly goes out to play in the mud and dirt for the first time...and he loves it.

I don’t know what to say except thank you, Boz, for living on this world in this time and contributing to some of my favorite music by one of my favorite bands. Learning to play an instrument from the ground up under such pressure and anticipation is one of the yeoman feats in music history, and you did it with aplomb to spare, to the point that no one listening could have imagined that you had just begun playing. Earthbound’s 21CSM stands as the most terrifying and committed version ever. I think you were the best singer KC ever had, and probably ever will have. Bye bye to the bass bashing Bozell, and thank you.

In a unique band as King Crimson Boz was just as unique and his vocals took the band in directions they rarely went again. This vocal and Boz’s 21st Century Schizoid Man vocal from Earthbound are highlights indeed, with that 21CSM vocal being perhaps the most memorable and powerful of all Crimson vocalists. R.I.P. Boz Burrell!

Certainly a fitting tribute to Boz. I really like the joyous, free-spirited feel of this - just this side of anarchy, and I think Bozzell would have approved. Unfortunately his work in the band was underappreciated and vilified for years, but in the last few years, I think most, if not all KC fans have come to enjoy his contribution to the Crimson oeuvre. As much as he may have disliked the songs and lyrics, he really did have a warm, wonderful voice, and he was no slouch as a bassist either. Thanks for the music, Boz. We’ll miss you.

This is an excellent and fitting tribute to dear Boz Burrell. Robert is spot on in describing this track as the Boz eras’ defining moment. Long a favourite of mine, Bozs’ performance on this track is brilliant. A great delivery of one of Peter Sinfields very best lyrics and his bass work here is outstanding. So are Mel Collins, Ian Wallace and Robert... and given the recent debate over Fripps’ best solo, I wouldn’t say this is his best, but its most definitely one of my true favourites.
Listening to this remix just now was rather poignant... those wonderful melodic choruses really do have a sad poignancy about them on this sad occasion, Roberts playing on those sections sound rather mournful. Along with the brutal but blistering rendition of "21st Century Schizoid Man", this is Bozs’ finest moment in King Crimson. His era was a very worthy one and it is a pity it ultimately wasn’t to be, but the legacy of this line up is a fine one, and has been greatly enhanced thanks to the various live releases that DGM has released over the last decade.
Thank you DGM and Sid for this treat and tribute, but of course the biggest thanks goes to Boz Burrell himself for his contribution to rock music and King Crimson.

I am very sad to read that Boz Burrell has died. The Island/Earthbound version of the band was my introduction to the band in 1972, when Earthbound’s Schidzoid Man was played on the radio, the complete 11 minutes, 45 sec. Boz screamed his heart out on Schidzoid Man, very impressive. As I’ve read I understand that Boz had some difficulty sometimes with the lyrics, the three boys had some difficulty with Fripp and Fripp had some difficulty with the jamming-nature of this line up. But for me this was the King Crimson number one. Thank you Boz for your voice, spirit and power. W.Mul

Earthbound was the album that completely pulled me in to the KC world (Red started the movement for me). It’s home-recorded quality hid the fact that this group jams and brings a lot to the table. Boz’s voicings drove several pieces and "It makes no difference what you think about me. It makes a whole lot of difference what I think about you!" and his subsequent gutteral grunting still stands in my mind as one of the great lines in Rock and Roll. Ab-so-friggin-lutely awesome!
That and his voicing on the Pharoah Sanders piece from Denver ’72 will always have a very special place in my heart and mind.
My deepest sympathies to Boz’s family and friends in this time of sorrow. I sure he will be missed, and I know he will not be forgotten.

This is sad news indeed. The Islands version of KC was always my favorite and I could not believe that Boz had never played bass before joining King Crimson. What a astoundingly talented musician! I am not sure, but in photographs it looked like he used a pick however his tone was always deep and full and he had a great feel. I did not know Mr. Burrell but I was truely inspired by his playing and all of the musicians in the Islands band. I still have the gatefold sleeve album and I have purchased every one of the archival records/downloads of the Islands band that DGM makes available. There is ALWAYS something new to my ears on those releases and Boz Burrell was a big part of that. Very very sad news. I think I will bring my jazz bass down to a blues gig I have here in portland tonight and tip one to Mr. Burrell. Fred Chalenor

I’m not sure what I can add or say that others will not do in a far more concise or eloquent manner. What I can say is that Islands (and the 1971-1972 band live) is one of my most enjoyed incarnations of that beast called King Crimson, simply because it was so at odds with everything that came before and followed on from it. The musicians may have moved on, but the music lives on, and is as pertinent and moving today as it was when it first took flight.
It is sad when any favoured musician passes away. I may never have met him, but Boz’s work with Crimson, and Bad Company, and so on, was an integral part of my youth and informal musical education. His contributions live on, but he will be missed. My condolances to his friends, family, and past/present bandmates in this time of loss.

It is strange how much the death of someone you have never met can touch you. Everyone in the DGM office has been shocked by the news in their own way, even though Boz the person has recently been nothing more than a stranger to whom we send a cheque on a twice yearly basis. Amazingly for a band that has encompassed so many people, he is, of course, the first KC member to die - althought Boz the musician will remain, in a way, part of the ongoing present, for as long as we enjoy his music. As a teenage fan of Bad Company, and in the last decades as part of a KC archive team, I have spent many hours in his company - and it was wonderful to hear his personality shining through on this aborted remix of Ladies of the Road. May he rest in peace. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.
