In my diary entry for the night of 1st July 1974, I assess the evening with ’best Crimso gig ever’. High praise for a show which nearly didn’t happen at all, and an out-of-doors one in a notoriously difficult city to please. New York was always very pro-Crimson, however-----the weather was warm, and the balmy twilight set the scene for a magnificent swansong. There were smart, fit women in the pre-gig dressing-room----always a good omen---and the deafening phase hum miraculously disappeared seconds before we took to the stage, as if a power greater willed this to happen. It certainly felt that way.
