No Band Members In Sight At Oberlin! November 1, 1981
Written by Chuck Benz
In ’81, Discipline came out, and I was an
enthusiastic young man, very pleased to be going to see Crim at Oberlin
College in Ohio (Finney chapel, to be precise). I’d listened over
and over to Discipline, loving everything about it.Restrooms were
behind the stage; not sure whether I saw any band members in the
vicinity when I made the visit. If I had, my earnestness might
have just what Robert wouldn’t have wanted to be interrupting him.
But I don’t remember doing any such. I do remember that it was
LOUD. My poor gf kept one ear pressed to my shoulder while my hand
covered her other ear. The Discipline
tracks were great. I don’t remember that they sounded much different
from the album, and 24 years later I my listening skills have only
advanced a little – I still hear only some of the many nuances that
make a hot date so different from a postcard. For me it’s the
excitement of the moment, seeing as much as hearing. But the most
exciting moment of the night was when Adrian introduced "Red"! Ohmygosh
- they’re playing an older track too! And it was great! Later that
year, I saw Zappa with some friends, and the volume got turned up to
painful levels at the end. But even so, it didn’t seem as loud as
Crim had been. They were monstrously loud, but even still had
gentle craft. I thought that setting, Finney Chapel, was acoustically very good - I later enjoyed Philip Glass’s ensemble there as well.

This actually sounds better then the one with the oboe version. I mean this from the sound quality point of view. My wife who is an oboe player is practicing her version of the oboe solo which I might Read more

Well, this is a pleasant surprise. I think I like it better than any of the P2 concerts I’ve heard. Nicely varied collection of jams.

Michael 'Garguantuan' Giles! s! Mon., May 27, 2013

Michael Giles certainly had to be the most ’orchestral’ (octopus-like!;) majestic drummer in KC! (And the only one utilizing double bass drums too, I believe, heard here to grand effect!) Read more

The last two pieces are worth the price of admission. The last piece has some nice soloing over an interesting throbbing bed of puissant tones. Even on the earlier pieces, it’s quite cool to hear the layering Read more

master(s) in the moment Mon., May 13, 2013

What really needs to be said: just listen to a master drummer in the moment--playing improvisatory and intuitively while at the same time reacting to Tony Levin’s bass (fretless?) underpinnings (who in turn, reacts to the percussive Read more
