      Performance Question June 14, 2011
Written by MarkSullivan
This is a lovely recording--I’d have given it 4.5 stars if I could have--and it’s wonderful to hear the synced solos. You don’t get the full effect of a Frippertronics performance with just the loops. I attended a 1979 performance (at Second Chance in Ann Arbor, Michigan), and Fripp took himself out of the loop for brief solos during the creation of the first loop. The second set consisted of him soloing over a playback of the first loop. I assume that was his standard practice. So my question is, were there such solos played during the creation of these loops? If so, this is an incomplete record of the performance (but it’s great to hear the solos over the loops, so I’m not complaining). As I said, not a complaint, just a question.

This was an amazing 2 and a half minutes. Thank you for putting this out. It is just great to hear, and to think it was almost 30 years ago.

Quite interesting to hear this embryonic version of Discipline! Jeff Berlin sounds comfortable in this setting with appropriately "rubbery" T-Lev type bass counterpoint; while BB’s drum kit work--pre slitdrum--moves within the rhythm in characteristic Bill Read more

I had the opportunity to meet Fripp in 1980. I learned what power falls in a brief moment... if only I had said "hello" or recognized silence as my friend... it was an immeasurable gift. Perhaps, it meant nothing to Read more

I can’t figure out if #2 is an embryonic "Frame By Frame" or a minimalist rework of "Red". It’s worth listening to several times to try to figure it Read more

This is some intense, powerful, unique stuff. It’s great to hear the building of the pieces from the first echoing tone to the finished piece with solo. And it’s refreshing to say ’unique’ and mean it, because of Fripp’s open-ended approach Read more

In my experience Frippertronics touch on something which Soundscapes never quite manage to touch upon. Maybe it has something to do with analogue vs. digital technology? This release is no Read more
